Arthur the senior reader

I started working at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in August of 2012.  At same time that my daughter, Freyja, was entering 1st grade at Torringford School in Mrs. Minerly’s class.  Arthur ended up being Freyja's senior reader.  Well, the i’s dotted and t's crossed and Arthur figured out that the new church secretary was her mom (I am sure her picture on my desk helped solve that mystery).  I remember the day he came straight over to the church after reading with Freyja at school.  He came into the office, sat next to my desk; he was clearly upset and informed me that he just made my daughter cry.  Now Freyja in first grade was tightly wound so this was not a surprise to me.  He wanted to reach her but she was closing him out and he wanted to know how to get her to open up.  He took the time to reach out to me in order to help my daughter learn how to read and meet her potential.  By the next visit they had, they became friends.  This friendship lasted and Freyja is now in third grade and reading above level.  Freyja adored Arthur.  She would send him cards for his birthday and leave him drawings in his Choir Cubby.  For what would be his last birthday, she made him a Beethoven Rock (pictured above) she thought of this on her own because she knew of his love of music.  He truly made a difference in her life and we will miss him greatly.  Rest easily Art and may peace and healing surround your family.
