Larry Jay “L. J.” Skeie, 72, passed away Wednesday, July 30, 2014, in Litchfield after a courageous battle with cancer. He was the husband of Nan Thoms Skeie. He was born on July 19, 1942, in Des Moines, Iowa, the son of Arthur and Evelyn Skeie.
L. J. was preceded in death by his parents; an infant brother, Stephen Skeie; and a sister, Janet Skeie Nesbit, of Creston, Iowa. He is survived by his wife, Nan; their son, David Skeie, of Shelton; and their daughter, Sarah Skeie Adams; her husband, Josh; and sons Malin and Luke, of Essex, Massachusetts.
L. J. graduated from Iowa State University with a degree in Industrial Engineering and worked at the Torrington Company. In 1969, he married Nan and they moved to Ames, where L. J. became owner of Skeie Pontiac-Saab. In 1982 he and his family returned to Connecticut, working at Torrington Brush Works and, later, owning Solo Horton Brushes, in Torrington.
L. J. was an avid pilot, golfer, motorcyclist and reader who enjoyed playing trumpet in Leo Liddle’s Big Band and being a member of the Sanctum Club. Active in his community, L. J. held several volunteer positions, including Senior Warden of St. Michael’s Church in Litchfield and President of the Litchfield Country Club. He also served on the boards of the Waterbury Foundation and the Greater Litchfield Preservation Trust and on the Connecticut Junior Republic’s Advisory Council.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, September 6, at St. Michael’s Church, 25 South Street, Litchfield, at 10:00 a.m. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Michael’s Church, P. O.
