Truda A. Tanner, 82, of Warren passed away November 20, 2019, after a courageous battle with breast cancer.

Truda was born June 28, 1937 in Winsted, CT, daughter of the late Frederick and Amelia Wilber. She was a graduate of Gilbert School Class of 1955. She grew up on Beech Hill Farm in Colebrook, CT, where she was active in 4-H and showing her Brown Swiss cows. She met her husband, Luke, while showing at the Big E in 1953. They were married September 24, 1955 and then she became a partner with him of Nutmeg Acres in Warren, CT.
Her passion was the Brown Swiss cow showing at the Big E, New York, and Pennsylvania All-American. She encouraged youth by leasing her animals so they could have the show experience, learn more about dairy farming, and develop a love of Brown Swiss cattle.

She had an adventurous spirit traveling to many destinations such as Australia, New Zealand, and Europe. She made several trips to Switzerland visiting farms and seeing Brown Swiss in their native land - roaming the Alps.
She attended many national Holstein and Brown Swiss conventions throughout her life making longtime friends all over the country.

She is survived by her husband of 64 years, Lewis A. Tanner of Warren, her son, Calvin (Jann) Tanner of Warren; her daughter, Lucinda Longo of Litchfield; grandchildren, Brian (Ellen) Whitlow of Granby, Joshua Tanner and Jessica Hurlburt of Warren, Meghan (Jeff) Berry of Bantam, Zachary Tanner and fiancé Samantha of Bethlehem; two great grandchildren, Amelia and Vivian; a brother, George (Gloria) Wilber of Colebrook and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her brothers, Raymond Arthur and Richard Wilber and her nephew, James Wilber.

The family would like to thank Dr. Brandt and all the staff at the Smilow Cancer Center of Torrington, CT for their compassionate care.

Friends and family may call from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, November 23, at Thurston Rowe Funeral Home, 283 Torrington Road, Litchfield. A graveside service in Warren Cemetery will be private. Donations may be made to Brown Swiss Historical Society, c/o Roger R. Neitzel, 758 Morning Glory Ln., Beloit, WI 53511 or American Cancer Society.

My deepest sympathy goes out to the Tanner family. I remember back in the '60's Trudy was the chaperone for the 4-H, going to the Big E, where Calvin & I were showing our cows. Trudy was a good friend and always helpful. With this week of Thanksgiving, I am particularly thankful for having known such a good person.

I’m so sorry to hear about Trudy. She was a great lady. My short time at Nutmeg Acres is one I still cherish and the memories of Trudy I will always hold onto. It was always a great day when Trudy baked strawberry rhubarb or some other treat for everyone. I had hoped to make the service but am living out of state now in Maine. Sending my thoughts and prayers to the whole family.
