John Erik Anberg Jr., 69, died unexpectedly at his home on Friday, November 6th, 2020.
Erik was a Veteran of the United States Army for which he served from 1970 through 1975. He always held a deep reverence, pride and love for his years of service, for all Veterans, and for his country.
Erik was born on December, 18th, 1950, the first child of John Erik and Margaret (nee McCafferty) Anberg in Brooklyn, N.Y. When he was still an infant his parents moved to Staten Island, N.Y. It was there that his brother Christopher and sister Mary Regina (McAuliffe) were born. Erik spoke often of his childhood and of the security, love and happiness his parents always provided him and his siblings.
The family vacationed annually in Goshen, CT on Lake Tyler, where they rented a cabin. His family also owned a cottage on Lake Waramaug in New Preston, CT where they would vacation. Erik, through his mother, had many McCafferty relatives in Washington, Cornwall, and elsewhere in Northwestern CT who they would visit often. CT. Erik had a deep love for the cottage and for CT and throughout his adult life would continue to visit often while still living on Staten Island.
In 1985 Erik married his beloved Patty (nee Murphy). Together they raised 2 children Joseph Brancoccio and Salvatore Caravello from her previous marriages. On October 1989 Erik and Patty welcomed the birth of their beloved son John Erik Anberg III. Erik’s son was the light of his life and brought him great pride and joy.
Erik worked for decades delivering oil all over Staten Island. He was an extremely conscientious, hard worker and took great pride in his work. He never took a sick day in over 30 years of work.
Following his divorce, Erik moved to the family cottage in New Preston CT on Lake Waramaug. After several years he moved to Kent, CT where he worked at The Board and Beam. He made many beautiful and cherished friendships during his time in Kent.
Erik met his beloved Kim (who always called him John) in 2015 and together they lived in Litchfield, and in the last year in Winsted.
Together, Erik and Kim adopted a dog named Georgia, who he referred to as his “little boo boo,” and they brought each other tremendous love and joy.
Erik was a gentle and loving soul, a very social person. He loved to be with people laughing and having fun. Generally, he was the center of attention—he had a way of bringing people together. He saw each and every person he met as a potential friend. He developed very strong and lasting relationships that he cherished and he has left many to grieve his passing.
Erik had considerable artistic talent and as he was retired in his final 5 plus years he was able to devote significant time to artistic pursuits. He has left behind many beautiful drawings and paintings. He also built furniture of all kinds. Each piece’s beauty reflects his talent and love. Multiple birds have raised families in the birdhouses that he built over the years. He created beautiful gardens and loved the joy that they brought to people, birds and other wildlife.
He donated to multiple charities too extensive to list but including St Jude’s, Wounded Warriors, Paralyzed Veterans, Audubon Society.
Erik has left his mark on many hearts. He made the world a better place with his love, joy, friendship and his giving nature. Even the earth and wildlife he tended so lovingly will likely miss him.

In lieu of flowers, any donations in Erik’s name to a Veterans group would honor him greatly.

A funeral service with Military Honors will be held on Thursday, November 19, 2020 at 1:00pm at Thurston Rowe Funeral Home, 283 Torrington Road, Litchfield.
