Loving husband, father and grandfather

William J. Burns, 93, passed away on July 23, 2016 at his home, surrounded by his loving daughters. He was a son of the late Joseph R. and Lillian (Hopps) Burns.

Bill was born August 31, 1922, raised in Thomaston and attended Thomaston High School. Before enlisting in the U.S. Marine Corps, he worked at Warren McArthur in Bantam where he met his future wife, Augusta Casadei Burns. They married on May 3,1947and had been married for 67 years. During his service in WWII, Bill participated in action against Japanese Forces in Tarawa, Saipan, Tinian and in the occupation of Japan. After being discharged Dec. 24, 1945, he worked at the Torrington Manufacturing Co. until he opened his business. He operated Bill’s Package Store in Litchfield from 1957 until retireing1989. Bill was very proud to serve 61 years in the Knights of Columbus as a 4th degree Knight and served as Grand Knight for 3 terms with the St. Anthony’s Council 56, Litchfield. He was also a fifty year member of the American Legion Post 27 and over a 40 year member of the BPOE Lodge #372.

Bill enjoyed spending time with all his grandchildren.

Bill is survived by a daughter, Susan E. Hiner of Brattleboro, VT, son William F. Burns and his wife Kathy of Bantam, daughter Gina L. Burns of Hardwick, MA, four grandchildren; Steven F. Hiner, Daniel P. Hiner, Stetson Burns and Kayla Burns, four great-grandchildren; Nicklaus, Conor, Avery and Mackson Hiner, his brother-in-law Aldo Casadei and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his loving wife Augusta C. Burns and his son-in-law David P. Hiner.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Tuesday, August 2, 2016 at 11:30 am at St. Anthony of Padua Church 49 South St., Litchfield. Burial with military honors will follow in St. Anthony Cemetery. Friends and family may call prior to mass from 9:30 to 11:00 am at Rowe Funeral Home, 283 Torrington Rd. Litchfield.
