Obituary for Debra Mae Whalen

Debra Mae Whalen
Washington, CT

Debra Mae Whalen (Manseau) passed away on unexpectedly on December 8th 2014 in her home. She was born on August 24th 1953 in Jersey City NJ.

Debra was a kind and caring person who often put the needs of others in front of her own. It wasn’t a surprise to anyone that she chose nursing as a career graduating from the Englewood Hospital School of Nursing in 1973. After her career in nursing was cut short by an injury she focused on caring for her family and community.

She spent the first half of her life in New Jersey but the foothills of Litchfield county where she truly felt at ease. As a child she spent many summers in Litchfield CT making memories that would last a lifetime. She finally settled in Washington CT with her 10 year old son in 1991.
Debra worked with her Mother at the family owned antique store Grampa Snazzy’s Log Cabin and volunteered at the Shepaug Valley Middle/High school library. There she was the library’s go to volunteer and was eventually offered a position as the library clerk where she worked until her sudden passing.

Debra was an avid reader and loved to spend her time with her family including her cats. The arrival of her first grandchild was especially joyful. She loved spending time with her “perfect princess” reading, playing and generally spoiling her. She was always showing photos to friends and loved to share what her granddaughter was up to.

Debra is survived by her son Richard Whalen and his wife Stefanie of Simsbury CT, her Granddaughter, and her sister Pamela Decker of Washington CT. She was predeceased by her Mother and Stepfather Joan and Douglas Graves and her former husband Robert Whalen.

Visiting hours will be from 10:00 am-12:00pm on Saturday, December 20th, 2014 at Rowe Funeral Home, 283 Torrington Road, Litchfield CT. A memorial service will begin at 12:00pm.
