Obituary for Josephine Lucille Vaill (Wheeler)

Josephine Lucille  Vaill (Wheeler)
Josephine Lucille (Wheeler) Vaill, passed away on December 10, 2012. She was the wife of 65 years to the late Willard Frederick Vaill Jr.

Born in Torrington, on August 29, 1923, she was the daughter of the late Sol C. and Ruth E. (Smith) Wheeler.

After graduating from Litchfield High School she furthered her education at The New York Institute of Dietetics Vocational School. She worked as an assistant dietitian for Danbury Hospital.

Josephine was a 4H leader, having been very active in 4H activities, and enjoyed working seasonally at Avalon Farms Orchard and Mt. Tom State Park.

In 1954, she started working as a forest fire tower observer in Roxbury and after 15 years, she was transferred to the Mohawk Fire Tower where she became the last tower operator for the State of CT in 1985.

Mrs. Vaill was a member of the Warren Congregational Church, where she taught Sunday school, sang in the choir and served as a Deacon for 10 years. She was a sixth degree member of the Grange and had just received her 70-year certificate. She held offices in the Wichita Grange #132 in Warren, Housatonic Valley Pamona Grange #10, Tachhannuck Grange #100 and Litchfield Grange #107.

A member of the Warren Prime Timers Senior group, she also enjoyed volunteering for the Washington-Warren VNA and Washington-Warren Food Bank.

Josephine is survived by a sister, Dorothy Wheeler Maddox of Bethlehem, a brother Clifford S. Wheeler of VA and N.C., two nieces, five nephews, six great nephews, two great nieces and several great-great nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be held 6 p.m. Thursday, December 13, at Rowe Funeral Home, 283 Torrington Road, Litchfield. Burial will be private. Friends and family may call from 4 to 6 p.m. on Thursday prior to the service at the funeral home.
