Obituary for Virginia T. James

Litchfield

Virginia (Thompson) James, 93, passed away on November 12, 2019 at Brandywine Living. She was the widow of Everson A. Kinn and Roye G. James.

Virginia was born in Hollis, Queens on October 19, 1926, daughter of the late William Burcham Thompson and Martha (Meister) Thompson.

She attended St. John the Baptist School in Mendham, N.J. and graduated from Adelphi University (Bachelor’s) and New York University.

Mrs. James taught third and fourth grade at the Ogden School in Woodmere, N.Y. for 26 years, before her retirement in 1981. Prior to teaching, Virginia was a research scientist at Temple University and in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

She served on the board of Glebe House in Woodbury and was active for many years in the Altar Guild at St. Michael’s Episcopal Church in Litchfield. Virginia enjoyed geneology and studied her family extensively. She also enjoyed gardening and traveling with her husband, Everson, and continued traveling with her second husband, Roye. She had a special love for Boston Terriers and named them all Missy.

Mrs. James is survived by her niece, Priscilla (Penny) Loomis (Lance) of Morris; great nephews Cameron and Colton Loomis of Litchfield and New York City; stepdaughter, Nancy Slovak (David) of Lake Worth, FL; two stepsons, Russell James (Linda) of Massapequa, NY and Roye James (Mandrea) of Boca Raton, FL; stepdaughter-in-law, Beverly James (Richard) of Delran, NJ and many step grandchildren. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her beloved sister, Natalie (Thompson) Penny in 1999, her brother-in-law, Reverend William G. Penny and two stepsons, Robert James and Richard James.

A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, November 16, at St. Michael’s Episcopal Church, 25 South Street, Litchfield. Burial will follow in Bantam Cemetery. There are no calling hours.
