Susan Fischer Spencer was born to Dr. William J.H. Fischer Jr. and Jane Dobbins Fischer in New York City on April 30th, 1941, raised in Providence, RI. and Litchfield, CT. She attended the Wheeler School and graduated from St Mary's in the Mountains. She attended Endicott College and graduated from New York University with a Bachelor of Fine Arts. She moved to Boston where she taught art in the Weston public schools and worked as a real estate agent in Cambridge, MA.
In 1979 she met Clayton B. Spencer of Litchfield and they were married on December 6, 1980. She continued to sell real estate in Litchfield county while also pursuing a lifelong career of volunteerism serving on the boards of White Memorial Foundation and Oliver Wolcott Library.
She continued her love of art and painting, showing her art locally. Following a family legacy of athletics, Susan was an incredible athlete, specifically an accomplished golf and tennis player. Susan and her sister Durinda loved hiking and traveling internationally to Europe, South America, and Africa. Susan was a passionate naturalist who loved to collect and identify all sorts of flora and fauna.
Susan is survived by her daughter Jane B. Spencer, her sons Jonathan C. Spencer and Oliver B. Spencer, her daughter Jennifer L. Gibbins, her brother Dr. William Fischer III, sister Durinda Chace, her grandchildren Clayton Spencer, Beatrice Spencer, Ollie Spencer, Lily Spencer, Jed Spencer, and her nieces and nephews Reeve Chace, Jay Chace, Emily Fischer, Toby Fischer, Marion Greene, and Clifford Blackwell.
A celebration of Life is being planned. Donations in lieu of flowers may be made to the White Memorial Foundation and Oliver Wolcott Library.
