Obituary for Stuart E. Carlsen

Stuart E. Carlsen died peacefully at home on May 7, 2022 of complications related to Alzheimer’s. He was born on March 14, 1929, in Brooklyn New York to Frederick E . and Harriet Stockton Carlsen. Stuart graduated from Brooklyn Technical High school in 1946 and in 1947, attended RPI in Troy NY. He married Dorothy Sonn in 1948 and they had 3 children together, Paul, Dean, and Jacqueline. While employed at General Foods lab in Hoboken, he attended night school at Rutgers University, majoring in accounting graduating 1st in his class in 4 years in 1952. He obtained a Master’s Degree in Industrial Engineering from Steven’s Institute in 1956.
During his varied 41 year career as a CPA, he worked at Arthur Anderson, Curtis Wright, Merck, Becton Dickinson, Colgate Palmolive, and General Housewares Corporation. After retiring, he worked as an Adjunct Professor from 1993 to 2000, teaching Accounting , Finance, and Business Administration at 11 colleges and Universities as the need arose. Among them were: Sacred Heart University, Quinnipiac, Teikyo Post, Fairfield University, Marymount College, and University of Hartford. Stuart liked to quote Eisenhower who ran for reelection in 1956 at age 70, “Wear out, don’t rust out”.
Stuart belonged to Financial Executive Institute, AICPA, and CPA of NY. Stuart was an avid Bridge player and eventually became a Life Master. He also enjoyed playing tennis and in his younger years, bowling and golf. He was a provocateur, thrived on stress, competition and a good debate. He made you think and had amazing critical faculties. Above all he had integrity.
Stuart moved to Bethel, CT in 1994 when he married Jeanne Klein Carlsen, who was able to see the light under his bushel. Stuart demonstrated his civic interests by serving on the Bethel Board of Education for 19 years; the Bethel Republican Town Committee for 19 yrs., 16 yrs. as Treasurer; and the Board of the Bethel VNA for 18 years, 12 as Chair of the Investment committee. He was Jeanne’s gift to Bethel.
In 2019, Stuart and Jeanne moved to Woodridge Lake in Goshen CT.
Stuart is survived by is beloved wife, Jeanne of 28 yrs. and his children: Paul Carlsen of Nyack, NY, Dean Carlsen of NYC, Jacqueline Carlsen of Norwalk CT. and Zoe Harrer, his beloved grand daughter, of Norwalk CT. Stuart was happy to share in the lives of Jeanne’s children: Stephen [Son] and wife, Steph Klein and their 3 children, Avery, Evan and Ainsley from Kirkland, WA; Jason Klein[son] and wife Caroline Klein and their 3 children: Max, Sam, and Adam from Shelton, CT.
The funeral will be held Saturday May 14, 2022 at 11am at the Milton Congregational Church, 548 Milton Road, Litchfield, CT, followed by a reception at the church. Burial will be private. Please park on the green in front of Trinity Episcopal Church.
