Obituary for Samuel H. Matson

Samuel H Matson was born on December 17, 1930, in Kent Connecticut. Sam, as he was known to his friends and family, passed away peacefully on April 4, 2022, in Torrington Connecticut. He was 91 years old.
Son of Edward L Matson and Gertrude Hall Matson, Sam was a lifelong resident of Kent, Connecticut where he was raised with his 7 other siblings.
Sam attended Kent Center school and Housatonic Valley Regional High School.
Sam was married June 1, 1957, at Saint Francis Church in Torrington, Connecticut to Elizabeth (Betty) Campbell. They were married for 49 years and remained soulmates even after Betty passed in 2006. They raised 3 children in town of Kent.
Sam worked for Kent School Farm and Industrial Products in Brookfield, Connecticut, before starting his career in 1958 at Kimberly Clark. Sam worked in shipping and receiving and was the plant’s fire chief before retiring in 1991.
Sam was an active member of the Kent Volunteer Fire Department and EMT in 1958. During his time with the Kent Volunteer Fire Department, he served as the treasurer for 18 years.
After retiring in 1991, Sam and Betty moved to Newport, New Hampshire, where they built their dream log cabin. They resided in Newport, and wintered in Palm Bay, Florida for the warmth.
Sam is preceded by his wife Elizabeth C Matson of 49 years, and his son Donald R Matson. Sam is also preceded by his brothers Edward JR and Ralph, sisters Gertrude Erikson and Marion Scott.
Sam is survived by his son Kenneth Matson of Bantam and his wife Victoria and their 4 children -- Stephanie and her husband Evan Fink, his two great grand-children, Madelyn and Mackenzie, Christina and her husband Steve Gagnon, his great grandson, Noah, Rebecca and her husband Ryan Litwin, his two great grandchildren, Emersyn and Eliot, and David Matson and his wife Gina Lorenzetti. Sam’s daughter, Marjorie Matson of Bantam, and her three children, Samantha and her husband Robert Schapp and great grandson Wesley, Jacob Finch and Allison Finch. Sam is also survived by his brothers Walter and his wife Judy Matson of Danbury, Douglas and his wife Jacquelin Matson of Kent, and brother Jay Burrwell of Florida.
Calling hours will be Tuesday, April 12th from 4 – 7 p.m. at Thurston Rowe, Litchfield CT. Services will be on Wednesday, April 13th at 2:00 p.m. at the Sacred Heart Church in Kent followed by his burial next to his beloved wife and son at the Sacred Heart Cemetery.
