Roger August Mahieu, Sr.
Loving Husband, Father, Grandfather

LITCHFIELD - Roger August Mahieu, Sr., 78, beloved husband of 56 years to Judith (Coe) Mahieu passed away peacefully on October 8, 2018. Born April 19, 1940 in Torrington, Roger graduated from Litchfield High School and attended Harvard Business School.

An involved and valued community member, Roger was active with the East Litchfield Volunteer Fire Department for over thirty years, rising to the role of Deputy Fire Chief and Town of Litchfield Fire Marshall. He served on the Advisory Board of Litchfield Bancorp, was a Mason, Shriner, Member of the Elks Club and St. Mary’s Drum Corps. He enjoyed restoring and showing Studebaker trucks with his sons.

He began his career as a Service Technician for Freiden Inc. before establishing a career with TRW out of New Jersey in corporate acquisitions.

Rogers’s talent and passion for construction became apparent after he built his family’s home on Howe Road in East Litchfield. This formed the foundation for a career transition away from corporate America.

In 1985, Roger and Judy became familiar faces in Litchfield when they purchased their pride and joy, the True Value of Litchfield Hardware store that thrived under their leadership, knowledge and dedication. In 2013, Roger received national recognition from True Value for excellence.

In more recent years, they wintered in Naples, FL where Roger served on their Condo Board as Treasurer.

He is survived by his sons and their wives, Roger Mahieu, Jr. and Sharon, Daniel Mahieu and Lelah, grandchildren Lauren, Drew and Samantha and his sister Jean Gelormino. He was predeceased by his parents August and Adrienne (Jeanfavre) Mahieu.

Calling hours will be 4-7 p.m. on Thursday, October 11 at the Rowe Funeral Home. A private service for the family will be held separately. All are invited to a Celebration of Life that will be hosted by the family at La Cupola in Litchfield at noon on Friday October 12.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be mailed to either the East Litchfield Fire Department (365 East Litchfield Rd. Litchfield, CT 06759) or the Research of the Neuromuscular Center hospital for Special Care Foundation (2150 Corbin Ave New Britain, CT 06053).
