1923 -- 2022

TORRINGTON -- Norman Winship Starr, 99, of Winchester and formerly of Torrington, beloved husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, died Saturday, Oct. 15, 2022, at Valerie Manor with family at his side. He was the husband of the late Lillian (Cochran) Starr, who passed away in 2001.

Born Aug. 21, 1923, in Cornwall, he was the son of the late Edward Burgis and Augusta (Young) Starr. He attended local schools and grew up on a farm where he discovered his love of machinery. He served in the US Army Air Force on the island of Guam from 1943 to 1945. He worked at the Hendey Machine Company both before and after his military service and, in the early 1950s, began a career at the Torrington Company, where he worked until 1985. He also worked for a time at the Sears repair shop, working on small engines. He and his wife raised their family on Meyer Road in Torrington in a house where they went on to welcome many grandchildren as years passed by. He was a long time parishioner of Center Congregational Church and continued to support the church even when he could no longer attend. He was a practical, "hands-on" man who could fix anything mechanical and make almost anything work better.

He is survived by his children, Shirley Carr of Torrington, Nancy Varney and her companion Alan Chambers of Torrington, Robert Starr and his wife Charlene of Torrington, David Starr and his wife Cindy of Torrington, Bradford Starr and his wife Sheree of Winchester and Donald Starr and his wife Nancy of Torrington; his grandchildren, Thomas Carr, Kathryn Carr, Jason Varney and his wife Cassandra, Sarah Starr, Amy Cohn and her husband David, Carey Starr, Brandon Starr and his wife Hyemi, Emily Cox and her husband Camryn, Aaron Starr and his wife Brittany, Lydia Starr, Matthew Starr and his wife Nikki, Benjamin Starr and his wife Meagan, Erica Petrillo and her husband Adam, Ashley Briggs and her husband Ryan and Cody Starr; and his great-grandchildren, Kayla, Neveah, Tyler, Jaelyn, Avri and Lukas Varney, Ari Starr, Mavrick Cox, McKenzie, Gillian and Evan Starr, Aiden Starr, Amelia Petrillo, Anthony John Starr, Addison and Evan Briggs, and Veyda Starr.

In addition to his parents and his wife, he was predeceased by his siblings, Adelaide Gangi, Sherman Lay Starr, Edward Preston Starr, John Foster Starr, William Comfort Starr, Hope Allen and Comfort Starr.

A graveside service with military honors will be held Saturday, Oct. 22, at 10 a.m. at Hillside Cemetery in Torrington.
