Obituary for Mildred K. Shaughnessy

Bantam – Mildred Katherine (Swett) Shaughnessy, 96, passed away peacefully at her daughter’s home on February 12, 2020 surrounded by family. She was born in Washington on April 7, 1923 to the late Mark Ward and Bertha May (Sheldon) Swett. She was the wife of the late George A. Shaughnessy, Sr.

Mildred is survived by her daughter Susan Gioia and her husband James of Torrington, her grandchildren; Brian Shaughnessy of Winsted, Tristan Gioia and his wife Marcia of Finland and Jessica Bortoloti of Torrington and her great grandchildren; Jefferson, Aidan, Gabriella and Isabela. In addition to her parents and husband, she was predeceased by her sons; George A. Shaughnessy, Jr. and Joseph Shaughnessy.

Mildred grew up at Gilbert Home in Winsted and graduated from Gilbert High School. She attended Waterbury Hospital School of Nursing. She owned and operated the Litchfield Answering Service. She loved life and found pleasure in gardening, flowers and birds. Millie received several awards; in 1967 the American Legion awarded her for outstanding contributions to the welfare of the people of Bantam, she also received the Tunxis Indian Award and the Silver Fawn Award from the Tunxis Council, Boy Scouts of America.

A graveside service will be held at Bantam Cemetery in the spring.
