Obituary for Michael James Birk

Michael James Birk
Owner of Birk's Property Maintenance, LLC
MORRIS--Michael (Mike) James Birk was called home to heaven on Sunday Sept. 13th surrounded by family and friends. Mike was born on July 9th, 1955, son of the late Foster and Eleanor Birk. He was self-employed and owned Birk's Property Maintenance for the last 20 years. He took great pride in the care of his customers as well as maintaining the center of Morris.
Mike was a kind, generous, and selfless person, always putting other people's needs before his own. A man so comfortable with himself, he could easily accept everyone else for who they were with no judgments. He was happiest being outdoors and mowing lawns, but also spending time with his family including his cat Billy and dog Peppy. He had a great love for his family and a huge heart. His kindness and sincerity made you feel lucky to know him. As most people know, Mike was always such a hard worker, determined to do his best both professionally and personally. Growing up in Litchfield and residing in Morris, Mike's friendly nature made him a fixture in both towns. He certainly had the gift of gab!
Mike was recently diagnosed with stage 4 cancer. He fought courageously to beat the cancer that ultimately took his life.
He is survived by his loving wife and best friend Susan (Balch) Birk, step daughter Candace (Cable) Zeiner and son in law Mark Zeiner, Jr., brother Tommy Birk, cousin Cheryl Stroker, and his lifelong friends. He is predeceased by brother Billy Birk and sister Ellen Dew.
The family would like to extend sincere appreciation to friends and family that stepped forward in the time of need.
Mike's wish was to have a church service, which will be held at Berean Baptist Church, 965 Litchfield Rd. (Rte. 63), Watertown, CT. on Saturday October 10th at 11:00 a.m.
In lieu of flowers, the Morris Fire Dept. is holding a fundraising ziti dinner to help with medical bills. The dinner will be held on Saturday Sept. 26th from 4:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. An outdoor tent will be available for dining or take out.
