Obituary for Julia F. Casey

Mrs. James A. Casey Sr. (Julia Filippini) died peacefully on November 3, 2021. Julie, as she preferred to be called, was born in Torrington, CT on September 1, 1927. She was the daughter of the late Silvio J. Filippini and Theresa Comporesi Filippini. Julie grew in faith through inspiring example of her parents.
After attending Southwest School in Torrington, Julie moved to Litchfield with her family and attended schools there. She graduated from St. Joseph University in West Hartford, CT with a BS in Nutrition and further completed a dietetic internship at the Bronx Veteran’s Hospital in New York. Following graduation Julie taught dietetics and nutrition to student nurses at Hartford Hospital and also worked as a consulting dietitian at Wolcott Hall, Adams House, Rose Haven and Extend-A-Care skilled nursing facilities.

On April 28, 1951 she was married to James A. Casey of Litchfield, CT. She was an active member of St. Anthony’s Parish family serving in many capacities: teaching CYO, serving on the altar committee and was a member of the choir as well as a Daughter of Isabella. In addition, Julie volunteered at the Litchfield Women’s Exchange, New Milford VNA, American Cancer Society, Oliver Wolcott Library Literacy for the Blind Program, served on the Lake Waramaug Task Force and remained active in St. Joseph’s Alumni Association.

Julie was happiest soaking up the sun’s rays, voraciously reading and completing her daily crossword puzzles on the dock at the family’s summer home on Lake Waramaug, New Preston, CT. She never refused an opportunity to “feed” the horses at Saratoga, Aqueduct or Belmont Race Tracks nor a trip to Atlantic City for a hand of “Black Jack”.

Her late husband, James A. Casey Sr., predeceased Julie. Surviving are her three children: James A. Casey Jr (Dona) of Litchfield, Silvia (Christopher) McKone of Glastonbury and Christine (Keith) Shortsleeve of Litchfield, grandchildren Brendan Casey, Caitlin Guerrera, Erin Hastings, Andrew McKone, Casey McKone, Evan Shortsleeve, great grandchildren: Casey and Lisa Guerrera, and Maeve and Teagan Hastings. She also leaves a brother Ronald J. Filippini and his wife Joanna of Litchfield as well as nieces and nephews.

On behalf of the family we wish to extend our gratitude to Becca Blazek and the healthcare team from Foothills VNA/Hospice.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, November 10 at St. Anthony of Padua Church, 49 South Street Litchfield, CT. Burial will follow in St. Anthony Cemetery, Litchfield. There are no calling hours.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Anthony of Padua Church or St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital, P.O. Box 1893, Memphis, TN 38101
