Obituary for John J. Mullen

Bantam – John J. Mullen, 69, passed away peacefully on December 13, 2022 at home in Bantam, surrounded by his loving family. He was born on March 30, 1953 in Danbury, Connecticut, son of the late John J. and Shirley J. Mullen.

John was raised on Pocono Road and graduated from Brookfield High School, class of 1972. He was a carpenter and wood worker for C.H. Nickerson Co. Inc. for 31 years retiring in 2019. He loved woodworking and craftsmanship.

John loved the outdoors, he was a true sportsman. He enjoyed bee keeping, motorcycle touring, hiking, photography and waking up before dawn to drink coffee while watching the birds. He had a love of history, particularly interested in old houses and barns. His children and grandchildren were his pride and joy; he loved spending time with family and was a great friend to all. He was the leader of his family with a relentless work ethic, he was a fierce protector and selfless provider, and the glue that held the family together. John was an amazing story teller, telling the best jokes and “one liners”.


He was a member and president, State Chapter, of the National Wild Turkey Federation. He assisted in the trapping and transfer of wild turkeys in Connecticut and Maine to further establish turkey flocks. John was an assistant scout master for the Boy Scout Troop 29.


John is survived by his three children; Justin J. Mullen (Stacey), Shawn R. Mullen (Kassandrea), and Katherine A. Mullen (Dan), his brother, Jeffrey Mullen and his sister, Cynthia Peragini, his former wife, Luann Mullen, his partner, Theresa Ossowski and his three grandchildren; Kline, Leon and Pippin. In addition to his parents, John was predeceased by his brother, David Mullen.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, December 17, 2022 at 11:00a.m. at St. Anthony of Padua Church, 49 South Street, Litchfield. Calling hours will be held prior to mass from 9:00am to 10:30am at Thurston Rowe Funeral Home, 283 Torrington Road, Litchfield. Burial will be private.
