Obituary for Joan Whitbeck (Hatch)

LITCHFIELD – Joan Elizabeth (Hatch) (Green) Whitbeck passed away on Saturday, Feb. 6, 2021 at Valerie Manor.

She was born in Greenfield, MA, on January 22, 1933. She grew up in Thomaston, CT and graduated Class of ’51 from Thomaston High School. She raised some of her children in Northfield and continued to raise her children in Litchfield as her family grew.

Joanie was well known for being a hard worker, no matter what job she was doing, especially when she worked at Deer Island Gate Restaurant, The Village, or her own place, The Scale House Luncheonette, where most of the Town of Litchfield were her customers. She also made many of them their Thanksgiving Day Pies for years. Oh those fantastic pies! She was an awesome cook and baker.

She cherished being a member of the Litchfield community serving on the Board of Education, the Board of Selectmen and several other committees. She loved being involved.

She is survived by her six children and their families; Cheryl Green (partner, Danielle McKim), Pam Fuessenich (husband, Tyler and son, Elliot), Candee Green, Kelli Green (daughter, Amanda and granddaughter, Victoria), Roland Green and Patrick Whitbeck (wife, Hillary and daughter, Brooklyn).

When times are safer to gather and the weather is better, we will celebrate Joanie’s life.

For those of you who knew our Mom, think of her today and smile! She always seemed to have one on her face.

Thank you to all at Valerie Manor for being Mom’s second family. You took great care of her when we no longer could.

God Bless
