Obituary for Janice K. Magnoli

Janice K. Magnoli
Janice K. Magnoli, of Washington Connecticut, died peacefully on Sunday April 24th, 2022
at the age of 85. She was the loving and devoted wife to Louis G. Magnoli.
Born on July 25th 1936, she was the beloved daughter of Morgan V. Koonz and Eleanor
(Richards) Koonz and sister of Eleanor and her husband, the late Donald Galli of
Cranston, RI and Donald Koonz and his wife, the late Pat Johnson of Orange City, FL. She
now joins her parents and her beloved son, Mitchell, who died suddenly on April 23rd,
1987.
She graduated from Thomaston High School in 1953, where she was co-captain of the
cheerleading squad and participated in clubs and committees. She was described in her
high school yearbook as “popular and pretty, with a winning smile.” She and Lou
married in 1955, after they were introduced by a friend at New Britain State Teacher’s
College, now Central Connecticut State University. They were married for 67 years.
Janice retired from Rumsey Hall School in Washington, CT in 2006 after 43 years as a
Language Skills teacher. She was a fierce advocate for her students and believed all
children could be successful in school with the right amount of support and
encouragement. In addition to her teaching duties, she worked side by side with Lou as
the wife of a teacher, coach and finally Head of School for over 40 years. She filled in
wherever there was a need: as an art teacher, helping coordinate special events at the
school, staying with children who were in the infirmary overnight, cooking for summer
school students and so much more.
Her favorite role, however, was as a mother, grandmother and great grandmother to
Son Mark Magnoli and wife Mary (Schoenbrun) of Harwinton and their sons Jacob and
Zachary; Son Jeff Magnoli and wife Annette (Mastropietro) of Torrington, their son
Connor and wife Tina Marie and their children; Anna, James, and Cassius, and their
daughter Skyler Magnoli and husband Jody Phillips; Daughter Susan Magnoli Thompson
and husband Mark of Morganton, North Carolina and their daughter Sarah; and the late
Mitchell Magnoli and wife Donna (McCrea) and their daughter Nicole Magnoli –Pena
and husband Chris Magnoli-Pena, and their children John Mitchell and Alexandra. Jan
loved them all deeply.
She also leaves sisters-in-law Lorraine Magnoli of Newington and Marilyn Magnoli of
Southington CT and many nieces and nephews whom she loved very much.
Relatives and friends are invited to call on Friday, April 29th, from 4-7 at Rowe Funeral
Home at 283 Torrington, Litchfield, CT and memorial services will be held on Sunday,
May 1st, at 2:00 pm at Salem Covenant Church in Washington, CT with a reception to
follow services at 3:00pm. A private burial will be held at Judea Cemetery prior to
services. Face coverings are optional but encouraged.
The Magnoli family would like to take this opportunity to thank the staff at Noble
Horizons in Salisbury, CT for the excellent care and love they gave Jan while she was in
residence. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Noble Horizons
or to the Language Skills Department at Rumsey Hall School.
