Obituary for George Winter Jr.

George Winter Jr.
July 17, 1934 – July 3, 2022
George Winter, beloved husband of Lillian Winter, entered the perfect peace and tranquility of heaven on July 3, 2022.
George was born in Chelsea, Manhattan, New York, the son of the late George Winter and his wife Catherine Winter.
He is survived by his wife, Lil, and stepsons; Douglas and Walter Wolke and his brother John Winter and his wife, Ann. He also left behind three nieces; Patty, Linda and Cathy and one nephew, John Winter, Jr. and their spouses in addition to four great nephews, six great nieces and one great, great niece.
In 1953 he joined the United States Air Force for four years and spent two years in Morocco and the rest of the time was stationed at Falmouth, Massachusetts. He returned home after his discharge from the Air Force in 1957 to give help to his brother in caring for their ailing father.
George then worked for two years as an office worker in the city and then decided to join the police force. He was awarded a Certificate of Graduation from the New York Institute of Criminology in 1958. He was also active with the Boy Scouts of America as a scout leader. After his father passed on he resigned from the police department and moved to Flushing with his brother for a while.
His long desire after visiting his best friend Thomas Nigrelli, who lived in Litchfield, CT was to move there. He loved the country atmosphere so much. George met Tom while in the Air Force and is the Godfather to Tom’s daughter, Susan Nigrelli. The Nigrelli’s became George’s second family.
George started working as a painter and wallpaper hanger in CT. His brother and his family eventually moved to CT and they both opened a paint store in Litchfield. They also did outside painting work for a while. George later left working in the store and mainly did painting and wallpapering. He worked in the painting business for 55 years. The store was sold in 2021.
He and Lil were married on September 14, 1985. Their goal was to sell Lil’s home in Westchester, New York and purchase one in Litchfield County. After much looking and traveling back and forth from CT to NY, George called Lil and said he thought he found the perfect house which he thought she would also like. She did and they purchased it. He so lived the area and home and enjoyed restoring it. He was always happy and content being in his home.
After retiring from painting George’s health went downhill with cancer, taking its toll in 2022.
His sincerest love and gratitude to AA for his 26 years of sobriety.
A memorial service will be held on Monday, July 11, 2022 at 11:00 a.m. at Thurston Rowe Funeral Home, 283 Torrington Road, Litchfield, CT 06759.
