Obituary

Mr. Emil T. (Lochowski) Locke passed away peacefully January 31, 2020 at Brandywine Assisted Living in Litchfield, Ct. after a long illness. He was the husband of Betty McKinnon Locke.
Mr. Locke was born September 19, 1924 and grew up in Wallingford, CT. He was 95 years old.
Immediately after graduating from Lyman Hall High School, he entered the U.S. Navy. After basic training, he was assigned to the Solar DE-221 a newly commissioned destroyer escort. After shakedown training in the Bermuda area, they were assigned to escort many convoys across the Atlantic in the Casablanca and Mediterranean runs and served in the Mediterranean and North Africa area. They were also assigned Operation Training Command with the Atlantic Fleet. Emil referred to his ship as “Shepherds of the Sea” keeping the convoys safe from enemy submarines. He was very proud of his ship, crew and their war effort.
When he returned from the service, he attended UConn and graduated from Hartford Institute of Accounting with a degree in accounting. After graduation, he began his career with Uniroyal Chemical in Naugatuck, CT. When Uniroyal built their corporate offices in Middlebury, Ct, he transferred to the corporate division in the comptroller department. In connection with his work, he travelled to many Uniroyal divisions in United States and Canada with an extended stay in the Baton Rouge, Louisiana office. He worked in the corporate division for 40 years until it closed in 1990 then transferred back to the Chemical/Chemtura division until his retirement in 1992.
Emil loved to sail and could be seen on Bantam Lake during many summers sailing with his friend Henry Stocking on their Hobie Cat. He enjoyed traveling with his spouse and friends and was able to visit Italy, England, France, Switzerland, Holland, and many areas in Canada. He was very interested in music and played the piano, organ, accordion and bag pipes.
On his retirement from Uniroyal Inc. he realized that you didn’t have to sit in a committee room to help someone. You just let anyone know that you are available and your calendar is quickly filled. You may have seen him husking corn or tending burners at the AFS corn sales, doing prep work or washing trays at the community soup kitchen in Torrington. Perhaps he was trimming the Sycamore tree in front of St. Anthony’s church or just helping someone in need. He was an early supporter of the Litchfield Jazz Festival and for 10 years volunteered as an usher under the tent. He was a faithful worker for the Litchfield Red Cross Blood Bank for over 25 years. He volunteered as usher at the early Sunday masses at St. Anthony of Padua Church in Litchfield.
He also enjoyed dancing, gardening and time with his family. He was a true friend to many and will be missed for his humor and his ability to start a conversation with anyone, anywhere, anytime.
Besides his wife, he survived by his daughter, Jacalyn Locke Mills and her husband Earl of St. Petersburg, FL. He was predeceased by his daughter Jan Locke Lincoln, his parents Casimier and Anna (Tomiczak) Lochowski, three sisters, Amelia Konopka, Sophia Wasilewski, Vera Stankus and three brothers Ted, Charles and Chester Lochowski.

The family would like to extend a special thanks to Michael Lyn and John Cappello and family for all their loving support and care that they have given over the years. They have been wonderful neighbors and are our adoptive family. We would also like to thank Fr. Tucker for many years of support and the staff at Brandywine for their wonderful care.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, February 17, 2020 at 11:30 am at St. Anthony of Padua Church, 49 South Street, Litchfield, CT 06759. Burial will be at a later date. Donations to a charity of your choice.
