Elinor A. Delay, 94, passed away on Friday, December 6, 2019. She was born on June 17, 1925 in Torrington, CT, the daughter of the late Olaf and Kirsten (Flaa) Hestad. She was the wife of the late Henry J. Delay, Jr., who passed away in 2017. They were married for 66 years. After retiring, they spent their winters in Melbourne, FL.

Elinor was a secretary at Lewis S. Mills High School for 30 years. She was a past member of the Harwinton Woman’s Club and the Harwinton Volunteer Fire Department Auxiliary. She was also a member of the Harwinton Congregational Church and was a nurse’s aid at Charlotte Hungerford Hospital during WWII. She loved counted cross stitching, knitting, reading and was well known for her delicious homemade apple pies. She never turned down an invitation to go out to lunch or shopping.

Elinor is survived by a brother, Einar Hestad of Kennesaw, GA; a son, Henry (Jay) J. Delay lll; a daughter, Cynthia Fredsall and her husband John, all of Harwinton; five grandchildren, Henry (Jason) J. Delay, lV and his wife Tracie; Patrick Delay and his wife Kerry, all of Mount Pleasant, SC; Andrea Cawthorne and her husband Richard of Winchester, MA; Kirsten Piechota and her husband Matthew of Burlington; and Angela Bronn and her husband Eric of Harwinton; and eleven great grandchildren: Ella, Brady, Ethan, Eli, Adam, Emmerson, Reese, Rowan, Molly, Logan, and Jackson. She was predeceased by her brother Arthur Hestad and sisters Solveig Gerrard and Ethel Handlewich.

There will be a celebration of Elinor’s life at the Fairview Farm Golf Course in the spring.
