Obituary for Earle F. Taylor Jr.
Earle Francis Taylor Jr., a Litchfield resident, died Wednesday, March 25, 2020.
The son of the late Earle Francis Taylor Sr., and Esther Pearson Taylor, Earle was born February 8, 1934 at the Charlotte Hungerford Hospital, Torrington, CT.
He grew up in Litchfield and attended local schools where he was captain of the basketball team and the soccer team, and was the star pitcher for the baseball team. He went on to graduate from Andover and from Yale University, class of 1956, with a BS degree in Industrial Administration.
After three years in California, serving in the Marine Corp as a naval aviator, he returned to Connecticut and found a job with Northeast Utilities (now Eversource), where he worked in various capacities for thirty one years.
His last position was as Director of the Department of Energy Conservation and Load Management. As such, he gave presentations on energy conservation at many conferences nationwide, as well as in Sweden, Belgium, Germany and South Korea.
After retiring from Northeast Utilities in 1991, he worked for five years for Kemper Management Services, Inc., as Vice President of Marketing.
After leaving Kemper, he was called by the World Bank to participate, along with them, in developing energy conservation programs for the Brazilian government. This involved many extended visits to that country. In 2000, he was invited to rejoin Northeast Utilities in a part time advisory capacity, and worked for them for five more years.
During his working years, he served on the Board of Selectmen and on the Board of Finance for the town of Litchfield.
He also found time to become a gentleman farmer, raising beef cattle on his property in the Milton section of Litchfield.
In 1988, in a brief departure from the norm, Earle joined the Goshen Players, accepting a walk on part in the musical," Of Thee I Sing". In 1989 he took the starring role of Horace Vandergelder in "Hello Dolly", a never to be forgotten experience!
In retirement, he joined a men's lunch group, a poker group, played golf daily, and enjoyed working on Sundays as the "Starter" for the Stonybrook Golf Club. Progressive illnesses kept him at home for the last several years.
His good nature, wealth of information and pithy sense of humor will be missed by all who knew him.
He is survived by his loving wife Holly Moeckel Taylor, daughter Amy Taylor Fernandez and husband Angel of Litchfield, son Gregory Taylor of Dillon, Colorado and wife Tricia, three grand daughters, Lauren Taylor Fraley,
Grace Fernandez and Gwen Fernandez.
He was predeceased by his son Jeffery Pearson Taylor, first wife Gwenda Terrell Taylor, and sisters Grace Taylor Young and Doris Taylor Spellman.
A memorial service and burial will be held at a later date.
